Underwater Inspections

TerraData’s ROV Inspection Services are used for erosion detection, storm debris monitoring, and identifying the general condition and deterioration of aging infrastructure.

ROV: General Information

In recent years, the condition of bridges, culverts, dams, and similar infrastructure in the United States has become a major public safety concern. Now there is a cost-effective, safe, and efficient solution to subsurface inspections with TerraData Unmanned’s ROV Inspection Services.

In 2017 the American Society of Civil Engineers provided the following grades to the following categories of infrastructure to “depict the condition and performance of American Infrastructure”. See https://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/

Bridges: C+
Dams: D
Inland Waterways: D
Levees: D

Deferred or inconsistent maintenance, along with the hard use of substructures well past their designed lifespans, make frequent and detailed inspections critical. TerraData’s ROV Inspection Services are utilized for erosion detection, debris identification and monitoring, pipe seam inspections, and identifying the general condition and deterioration of aging infrastructure.

TerraData’s ROV Inspection Services are the perfect tool for the inspection of culverts in order to identify debris or failing pipe seams so these issues may be addressed before storm season where flow rate is critical. Debris and failures can be identified and captured using the ROV’s camera and on-board lighting system in low visibility environments while their position is marked within detailed reports for later retrieval or repair. Our equipment and professionally trained team can navigate turbid and complex systems that pose serious safety risks to divers and less capable equipment.

In areas where alligators are a threat to divers such as in and around Florida’s numerous waterways, our services are a far more cost-effective and safer alternative to divers conducting a general inspection. With our ability to carry external cameras, conditions above the water can be inspected as well. Information such as water temperature, vehicle depth, magnetic heading, and more are captured within the imagery collected and provided in detailed inspection reports.

SAFE

In addition to the time and money saved, using an ROV as an alternative to human based inspections greatly reduces the risk of your project. Whether your project requires a visual inspection of a culvert that is expected to be structurally deficient or is in an area with a possible alligator population, TerraData’s ROV inspection services offer a safe alternative to gathering the data you need; without putting human lives at risk.

COST-EFFECTIVE

In an area with certain risk factors such as weakening hardware or a known alligator population, certain safety measures and regulatory preparations must be completed by dive teams. This increases the amount of time individual inspections take and ultimately makes frequent, thorough inspections by dive teams cost-prohibitive. TerraData can arrive on-site, launch an ROV, complete the inspections, and exit the scene safely in less time than traditional diving methods. This operational efficiency makes TerraData’s ROV Inspection Services the most cost-effective solution.

TRAINED PROFESSIONALS

TerraData’s Lead ROV Pilot Instructor is formally trained in the use of everything ROV from SubSea Robotics at Temple College, the first program of its kind in the USA. We know it is important for our clients to have faith in who is inspecting their infrastructure. That is why all of our ROV operators go through a rigorous internal training program derived from the curriculum at SubSea Robotics, the provider of professionally trained ROV operators to the offshore gas and oil industry for over 20 years.

“I have enjoyed working with TerraData Unmanned on a recent project in South Florida. They were able to efficiently collect detailed video of some large diameter culverts in the City using their ROV equipment. The video supported our inspection and evaluation of culverts and was a cost effective alternative to using a traditional dive team. I look forward to working with TerraData again when we need data collection via ROV or UAS. They have always been responsive, organized, and professional.”
